Jerry Mele was U2's head of tour security from 1989 to 1997. He was the most straightforward, decent, coolest member of the tour entourage. He treated fans with decency and respect, which we could not help but offer in return. He was never the harsh bully type security, but spoke to fans to let them know what was going on and keep their excitement in check. Bono's War Vet persona in performing `Running To Stand Still' during Zoo Tv was a tribute to Jerry.
It was unfortunate that Jerry's security career ended after he was seriously injured from a pistol whipping at the Popmart concert in Mexico. Scott Nicholas worked closely with Jerry for years, and has brought that respect and decency towards fans to his role as head of tour security. Many of use were fans of Jerry, and miss him.
