Partnership will deliver more than $10 million to fight AIDS and launch with free download of new U2 song debuting during Super Bowl

NEW YORK, Jan. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- (RED), rock group U2 and Bank of America today announced a partnership that will generate more than $10 million to fight AIDS. Details are available at 

The partnership will kick off with a commercial during the February 2 Super Bowl that will feature U2 performing a new song, "Invisible." The song will be available as a limited edition release on iTunes for free download during the game and for the following 24 hours. For every download during that timeframe, Bank of America will donate $1, up to $2 million total, to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which provides life-saving HIV/AIDS treatment, testing and prevention services to tens of millions of people in the world's poorest countries.

(RED) has already generated more than $240 million for the Global Fund since being founded in 2006 by U2 lead singer Bono and Bobby Shriver in order to drive corporate donations to the fight against AIDS. The additional funding from Bank of America will help (RED) surpass a quarter billion dollars raised.

Key to the success of this initiative will be raising awareness among Bank of America's vast customer base and more than 240,000 employees, and providing opportunities for them to take action at this critical moment in the global effort to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015. U2 will premiere a new song, “Invisible,” via a commercial from (RED) and Bank of America that will air during next Sunday’s Super Bowl (Feb. 2.) As previously reported by Billboard, the song will set up U2’s forthcoming album – a follow-up to 2009’s No Line On The Horizon, and the group’s first under new manager Guy Oseary.

The track will then be made available on iTunes for 24 hours and for each download during that time, the Bank Of America will donate to the Global Fund To Fight Aids,Tuberculosis And Malaria.
 
“Invisible” will be available a limited-edition free download on iTunes for the first 24 hours after the Super Bowl commercial airs. For every download during that time, Bank of America will donate $1 (up to $2 million) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, to provide life-saving HIV/AIDS treatment, testing and prevention services in many of the world’s poorest countries.

Beyond the downloads, U2, (RED) and Bank of America expect to generate more than $10 million in donations and funding for the campaign.

We have hear more from our sources and of course we have all reviewed the comments Bono made the other night after the Globes award.

Which we view as a great sign that U2 is starting the process to getting their next single out.

We expect to see something around Superbowl time frame. Heck that would be perfect to get the global stage release during the biggest show in the world.

Yup proves that the marketing machine behind U2 is alive and well.

The new U2 album should come in June. So says Bono, to me, at the Weinstein Company party following the Golden Globes. Bono and U2 won the Globe for their song “Ordinary Love” from the movie “Mandela.” The group held court on a platform of couches, entertaining friends including Usher on Sunday night before taking off to an after party said to be at 1Oak on Sunset Boulevard.

The group had just played at Sean Penn’s Haiti fundraiser on Saturday night with a young Haitian singer named Anaelle Jean-Pierre. I sat with Bono at the Weinstein party and praised him for his passion about politics, Mandela, Africa, etc.

“We’re persistent, I’ll say that,” he replied with a rueful chuckle. “I don’t think we’re the only ones who care. I think lots of people do. They just don’t have the opportunity.”

Bono told me the group was busy finishing the new album. “We’re still working some things out,” he said. In the meantime, they will release a new single in the next few weeks. It’s called– and this is exclusive– “Invisible.” “It’s not what you expect,” Bono told me. “It’s not your typical love song.”

U2 wins a Golden Globe® !

Congratulation to Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam on winning a Golden Globe® for "Ordinary Love" - "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"

The whole concept became a reality with the support of so many people. Harvey Weinstein was behind the idea from the start after meeting the back way back in 1981. 

Bono said in an interview  “Harvey is remarkable and has the same fire in his belly now that he did when we first met” In order to make this single possible U2 had to push back their album keeping millions of fans on hold as they accepted toe offer to compose and perform the song for the film.

Bono took inspiration from Nelson Mandela's letters to Winnie Mandela when he was in prison. Harvey had to wait a bit this was not a song that could come to fruition over night and required the band to put forth some thought and make it an unforgettable tribute to a wonderful man.

The song became number one in 15 countries around the world without any promotion.

Hollywood: It was widely reported that U2 was in town over the weekend working on some super special project that could relate to a Superbowl commercial.

In a star filled Hollywood hotel ballroom, Bono, The Edge and 300 other guests attended Sean Penn's third annual Help Haiti Home benefit, which raised nearly $6 million for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization.

The surprise of the evening was a performance by U2. The Edge and Bono performed an acoustic set with Anaelle Jean-Pierre and followed up the evening with three songs. 

It is hard to keep a secret in Hollywood however; this kept tight under wraps. Did the Hollywood elite get a chance to hear three band new songs? No sorry three songs where Hallelujah, Desire and Vertigo.  We expect to see today photos and maybe some audio from the evening. We can say one thing for sure. U2 marketing machine is under way, watch for something big to hit the streets very soon.
